Level 2 Diploma in Horse Care

The Level 2 Diploma is popular with school leavers who enjoy practical learning and students progressing from the Level 1 Diploma in Horse Care. The programme combines practical skills and theoretical knowledge. Stable management and riding skills will also be developed.

The Level 2 Diploma includes industry-related work experience. It prepares students for entry-level roles in the equine industry. It is also the perfect foundation for students wishing to progress to the Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Equine Management.

By completing the Level 2 Diploma in Horse Care, students will demonstrate competence in skills such as:

  • Daily yard duties and stable care

  • Feeding, turnout and grazing assessment

  • Grooming and tack fitting

  • Safe horse handling and transportation

  • Communication and teamwork in a workplace setting

  • Professional conduct and personal development

About

Work will be assessed using a variety of practical assessments, assignments, coursework and exams.

  • The programme runs from September to July
  • Full-time, minimum 17 ½ hours per week
  • Riding and non-riding option
  • Progression onto Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Equine Management

Course Units

  • Clean and maintain stables
  • Carry out routine care and monitor the health and well-being of horses

  • Restrain horses using specified methods

  • Monitoring and maintaining health and safety

  • Maintain and develop personal performance

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships

  • Prepare a stable for a horse

  • Fit and remove horse clothing

  • Clean and groom horses for appearance

  • Turn out, catch and maintain horses when turned out

Entry Requirements

  • For those age 16+ with a keen equine interest
  • Applicants are required to complete a skills test to demonstrate they are working to the Level 1 Horse Care standard
  • For the riding option, applicants must be able to ride at walk, trot and canter safely, with some previous horse care experience required
  • A maximum weight limit of 13 stone for riders
  • GCSE at 3 or above in Maths and English or Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English. Students who have not achieved a GCSE 4 or above in Maths and English will be required to continue studying Maths and English, alongside the Level 2 Diploma, working towards a GCSE Grade 4 or Level 2 Functional Skills.
